Seminar Series: Christian Doctrine and Cultural Progress

Seminar Series

Christian doctrine and Cultural Progress

Prof John Schellenberg (Mount St Vincent)

In Trinity Term 2023, John Schellenberg (Mount St Vincent) visited Oxford, and gave a series of seminars on his current project 'Christian doctrine and cultural progress'. Prof Schellenberg is well known for his work on divine hiddenness, a theme he first explored while a doctoral student at Oxford, under the supervision of Richard Swinburne. In his current project, he is developing a number of objections aimed at Christian teaching in particular, including a distinctive form of the hiddenness objection, targeted at Christian theism. Overall, the theme of the seminar series was the question of whether 'cultural progress' on a variety of moral and cognate issues discredits the claim of Christian doctrine to be revealed. In the final seminar, we considered how the Christian tradition might be elaborated, if this critique holds good.
